Assassin’s Creed Shadows is going to keep the player choice element, but there’s a new way to play without making any choices.
During a Reddit chat, Jonathan Dumont and the team talked about this fresh option.
“Choices come more into play when recruiting allies and [romancing] some of the characters,” Dumont mentioned. He explained that Canon Mode lets you experience the game with preset decisions, skipping the need to choose every step. “Hope this makes it fun for everyone,” he added.
Shadows is similar in size to Assassin’s Creed Origins, Dumont said. Brooke Davies shared that players can still pick romantic partners outside Canon Mode, with both short and long romance possibilities. She noted, “The story of Shadows culminates in a single, [canonical] ending. That said there are many unique paths leading to this point, and in particular that will determine who is (and isn’t) at your side along the way.”
People like when games have options, but sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy the story.
The game will take a fresh spin on the modern-day storyline. Dumont hinted at something different yet linked to past lore, evolving over time with the Animus Hub and future games. Hattori Hanzō from Assassin’s Creed: Memories is also making an appearance in Shadows.
Also, Davies pointed out that Naoe and Yasuke won’t be friends right away. “Their paths do ultimately converge and we see them form a league together around common cause,” she said. Their journey is bumpy with different backgrounds and ideas, and players might help them make choices along the way.
Ubisoft recently gave a big update on how fighting will work in Shadows. Some info about the battle pass got out, but Ubisoft assures that the Animus Hub rewards are free. You can play Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC starting February 14, 2025.
