Avowed 30FPS on Xbox Series X for Enhanced Visual Effects

-

Obsidian Entertainment has shared that their new first-person RPG, Avowed, will aim for a “baseline” of 30 frames per second on Xbox Series X and S.

Art director Matt Hansen discussed this choice on the Iron Lords podcast (via IGN). He explained, “We are targeting 30fps, bare minimum. That’s the expectation. It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames. And that allows us to get a lot juicier with VFX and lighting and all this other stuff. It’s a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we’re really happy with that. The game’s running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal.”

Avowed isn’t alone in this approach; several other first-party games on Xbox Series X|S also have a more cinematic frame rate. For instance, Starfield was locked to 30fps for consistency on these consoles. Interestingly, a 60fps mode came later for Xbox Series X in May, while Xbox Series S got an update just recently.

People believe that games should be fun even if they don’t run at the highest frame rates.

Initially planned for release later this year, Avowed is now scheduled to launch on February 18, 2025. This delay means it won’t clash with other big titles like Dragon Age: the Veilguard, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Plus, players can look forward to at least 10 different endings to discover!
