In Dragon Age games, the story changes based on the player’s decisions.
BioWare, the creators of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, aims to respect players’ past choices without sticking to a single story path. Jon Epler, the creative director, mentioned to GamesRadar that they want to “avoid the idea of there being a single canon.” He explained, “if we don’t feel we can do something respectful of the choice you made we oftentimes just don’t necessarily reference it… We never want you to feel like your world state is being invalidated.”
Since The Veilguard is set about ten years after Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare tackled this by setting the new game in another area of Thedas. Epler pointed out that avoiding direct contradictions with players’ past decisions was key to their approach.
“We may not always reference your choice, because it may not have an actual impact on the story that you’re telling right now,” Epler said. “But we’re never going to be like ‘and that thing you did never happened.'” Fans really appreciate this effort to honor their past choices.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on October 31.
