Bloober Team is aware of the negative comments and videos criticizing their past games, and they admit they’ve made some not-so-great games before.
Wojciech Piejko, the director, shared that with their new game, Cronos: The New Dawn, they aim to show they can create something unique from scratch. Although Silent Hill 2 Remake was a pleasant surprise, Cronos is crafted by a different team and promises a fresh taste, like a pizza with all new toppings. The story follows The Traveler, a mysterious character who journeys through time, from a mutant-filled future back to 1980s communist Poland, trying to save important people who might help in the future. Fans think that time travel will make things crazy, just like in Netflix’s Dark series, which often left us scratching our heads.
Zieba, another key figure, explained that even though Cronos has a pandemic theme, it’s not meant to be a big statement about COVID. Initially, they were hesitant about this plot point but decided to keep it because it fit the story perfectly.
We feel that Bloober Team is ready for a new chapter in their journey.
From using new tech to moving from a first-person to a third-person view, the experience gained from working on Silent Hill 2 was invaluable. Now, the team wants Cronos to be the second part of a successful one-two punch. Zieba compared their journey to that of an underdog who proved everyone wrong by delivering a hit, saying, “Nobody believed we could deliver, and we delivered.”
Although many doubted Bloober Team when they took on the Silent Hill 2 project, thinking they couldn’t handle survival horror, the team proved them wrong. Bloober even asked the public for patience during development. “It was tough for those couple of years before [Silent Hill 2’s] release,” Zieba admitted, but the team remained strong and focused.
Piejko praised the remake team’s achievement, saying they accomplished the impossible despite online negativity. The company’s shift to horror games truly began with Layers of Fear, which marked a turning point from making poorly received games like Basement Crawl. Silent Hill 2 Remake is now seen as the start of “Bloober Team 3.0,” and Cronos is their chance to show how they’ve grown.
After unveiling Cronos, Piejko felt relieved by the positive feedback, noting how the studio’s reputation is improving. There’s still pressure to create something amazing from scratch, but the directors are excited to prove their talent in the horror genre.
Zieba expressed the team’s commitment to horror, stating, “We want to be a horror company,” and emphasizing their desire to evolve within this niche naturally. “We gathered a team that loves horror,” Piejko added, making it clear they have no intention of switching to other genres.
Cronos: The New Dawn is set to be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
