The Borderlands movie didn’t exactly rock the box office this year, leaving many disappointed. But something interesting happened: it actually gave a little boost to the video game sales. During a call about how the company is doing, Strauss Zelnick, who runs Take-Two Interactive, talked about how the movie didn’t make much money in theaters. He said, “Even though the film was disappointing, it actually benefited our catalog sales. So that is a sign that making a movie or a television show based on our very high-quality IP can drive catalog sales, and that can be a good thing.”
Zelnick has spoken about the movie before. When reviews weren’t kind after it came out, he asked people to “give the film a chance.” Also, he pointed out that Lionsgate paid for the movie, not Take-Two. He said, “All that said, we’re really selective, and one of the reasons we have been so selective about licensing is we would really prefer that everything that comes out with our brands in it is really, really successful.” Sometimes, fans just want to enjoy a good story without worrying about the numbers.
Looking to the future, there’s some exciting news! At Gamescom’s big event in August, Take-Two and Gearbox announced Borderlands 4. This new game in the series will be ready in 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Meanwhile, Gearbox is trying to show the game early to a fan who is very sick.
