Call of Duty File Sizes Shrinking, Including Black Ops 6

-

Call of Duty games usually take up a lot of space on your console, but Activision is planning to change that before Black Ops 6 comes out.

On August 21, there’s a big update for Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone’s Season 5 Reloaded. This update won’t just add new content; it will also make the game files smaller by reorganizing them and using new texture streaming technology.

With the new update, you can choose which Call of Duty games to download. Warzone will be separate, so you can “opt-in” to download it whenever you want.

Activision says, “Flexibility and choice matter. We want to give players the choice to download each Call of Duty, including Call of Duty: Warzone, when and how they wish.

The smaller file sizes are possible because Call of Duty is using texture streaming more. Activision explains, “With these capabilities, we can cycle content that is less frequently used by players to a streaming cache, avoiding the need to download it directly to your device’s storage.”

Fans think it’s great when companies listen and make changes for us.

Activision warns that the first update will be big but won’t permanently increase the game’s size. Instead, it will reorganize files and add new tech for the new user interface coming in October.

People playing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PC will get everything in one download. But if you’re on PlayStation 5, you’ll need four separate downloads. The first one is like other updates needed before starting Call of Duty. The second happens in the app after starting MW3 or Warzone. Then there are two more downloads when re-accessing MW3 and Warzone.

Activision explains this by saying, “The PS5 requires split downloads due to differences in file organization. The initial download may be larger in size for players who also have MW2 content installed.”

As a thank you for completing this download process, Activision is giving players Battle Pass Tier Skips and double XP tokens:

  • 10 – 1-Hour Double Player XP Tokens (10 Hours Total)
  • 10 – 1-Hour Double Weapon XP Tokens (10 Hours Total)
  • 10- Battle Pass Token Tier Skips

You’ll get these rewards when you log into Call of Duty after finishing the Season 5 Reloaded update.

Black Ops 6 was thought to be a 300GB download before, but Activision has confirmed it won’t be that large thanks to this update. But if you decide to install Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Warzone, and all content packs together, it could still take up a lot of space.

You can try out Black Ops 6 during the beta later this month. Black Ops 6 releases on October 25 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. Live gameplay for Black Ops 6 multiplayer will be shown at the Call of Duty: Next event on August 28.
