Call of Duty has taken a vibrant and sometimes wild turn, moving away from the realistic vibe of its older games.
In the latest installments, players can dive into Warzone as famous faces like Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, and WWE superstars, alongside characters from Dune and The Boys. Even Black Ops 6 has jumped on the bandwagon, offering bundles that transform operators into a muscular shark or a chilled-out amphibian. Some folks might think these flashy skins are over the top, but a Treyarch developer has shared in an interview with Dexerto why this trend is here to stay.
A lot of people love when games are fun, even if it means breaking some rules.
Miles Leslie, an associate creative director at Treyarch, explained how they aim to strike a balance between entertainment and authenticity. “Fun always comes first for us,” he mentioned. “We try to keep the unique elements that make a Black Ops game special, but we’re not afraid to bend the rules if it means more fun for players.” Given that the Black Ops series is home to Call of Duty Zombies and its mind-bending stories, it makes sense for them to embrace some wacky themes.
Campaigns, however, are a different story. The focus remains on delivering a detailed narrative with characters that fit the era and story, as Leslie pointed out. “The Campaign has a tightly-defined cast of characters with an era-specific look to them that fits the story that we and our friends at Raven Software are telling,” he said.
Postseason tales are serious too, but there’s room for a little cosmetic fun along the way. Expect even more of these crazy operator bundles in the future seasons of Black Ops 6. Activision has already hinted at a Squid Game collab coming in January, so those bright pink suits will soon be part of Black Ops 6 and Warzone.
Recently, Season 1 Reloaded brought more multiplayer maps, the Merry Mayhem holiday event, and new DLC weapons to the game.
