Capcom surprised everyone recently by bringing back Okami and Onimusha with new sequels.
In a press release, Capcom shared their future plans, revealing that they want to bring back some old game series while also creating fresh games. They mentioned, “In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on reactivating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, which includes reviving past IPs like [Okami 2 and Onimusha Way of the Sword], in order to continuously produce highly efficient, high-quality titles.” By doing this, Capcom hopes to keep making awesome games that people love.
For the Okami sequel, Hideki Kamiya is back as the director, just like in the original game from 2006 on the PS2. There was a follow-up in 2010 called Okamiden for the Nintendo DS, but the new project’s release date is still a mystery.
Meanwhile, fans can expect Onimusha Way of the Sword to hit PCs and consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2026. This will be the first big Onimusha game since Dawn of Dreams in 2006.
You know, sometimes we just can’t wait to see our favorite old games come back to life.
Capcom has hinted at this before. Back in 2019, they talked about using old franchises again, and earlier this year, they promised Mega Man isn’t gone for good. So, maybe we’ll see the Blue Bomber alongside Okami soon enough!
