Details about Destiny 2’s next expansion, called Codename: Apollo, are still very scarce.
On a recent developer livestream, Bungie shared a bit about Codename: Frontiers, the next big phase of Destiny 2 starting in Summer 2025, alongside Episode: Revenant, which kicks off October 8. Alison Luhrs, the narrative director, revealed some new concept art and dropped a few hints about what players can expect as Destiny 2 dives into a fresh story arc.
Bungie has announced that starting in early 2025, after the end of the current episodes, there will be two major expansions instead of one big release each year. These smaller expansions will come more regularly and be about the size of the original Destiny’s Rise of Iron expansion. The first one, Codename: Apollo, promises a nonlinear campaign with metroidvania-style gameplay, letting players choose their own path as they unlock new abilities.
While Bungie has been very secretive about the new destination in Apollo, Luhrs gave a tiny clue during the stream. She said to picture entering a mansion’s parlor where the owner hints at a secret door that opens by moving a book or statue, something hidden in plain sight.
Concept art shown by Luhrs didn’t reveal much but did provide a peek into the possible themes of Apollo. One piece shows people performing a ritual with blue energy, set against a background that looks like the Cosmodrome on Earth. This could hint that the new location is somewhere hidden on Earth.
Another piece of concept art suggests an underground area with rock spires and structures like staircases. This could mean we’re looking at a hidden, possibly subterranean, Earth location with new characters we haven’t met before in Destiny 2.
Bungie also shared some inspirations for Apollo, which include 1960s music like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, and King Crimson.
They also mentioned Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse Five. The book is about a man named Billy Pilgrim who experiences the firebombing of Dresden in World War II and claims he becomes unstuck in time, with the story jumping around his life and even to an alien zoo on the planet Tralfamadore.
Lastly, they mentioned Scavenger’s Reign, an animated series where humans get stranded on an alien planet after a spaceship crash. Assistant game director Robbie Stevens pointed out how the series shows the alien world’s mystery and strangeness.
Fans are excited but also very curious about what will happen next.
Given Bungie’s track record, it’s fun to guess about Apollo, especially since time travel is already a big part of Destiny 2’s lore. Remember The Witch Queen expansion where Mars had parts from different times breaking into the present? Now, as Bungie wraps up the Light and Darkness Saga with The Final Shape expansion, it feels like anything could happen next in Destiny 2.
