Joe Blackburn, the guy steering the Destiny 2 ship, dropped a bit of a bombshell on Twitter. Next month, he’s off to new adventures, leaving the helm of Bungie as The Final Shape, their latest project, is wrapping up. And who’s taking over? Tyson Green, a Bungie old-timer with more than two decades under his belt.
So, what’s the big deal with The Final Shape? It’s kind of a big deal, actually. It’s the grand finale to the Destiny 2 storyline we’ve all been hooked on. Blackburn spilled the beans about reaching a crucial phase in development: the End-to-End playtest. Sounds fancy, right? It’s basically the team going all hands on deck, making sure everything’s polished to a shine and squashing any pesky bugs.
Oh, and about videos and stuff. There’s this note about needing a certain browser to watch videos. And something about an invalid file format. Plus, a gentle nudge that not everyone can access this content. They even ask for your birthday before letting you in on the video action. Pretty standard fare, but it’s all about keeping things above board, agreeing to terms of use and privacy policies.
Back to the juicy stuff. Blackburn’s exit coincides with the playtest finale. He’s passing the baton to Green right as they cross this milestone. Blackburn’s been all in on Destiny 2, calling his time at Bungie a “privilege of a lifetime.” He’s a fan through and through, and he’s not planning to disappear completely. Though he’s taking a breather from social media, he’ll still be enjoying Destiny from the player’s side of the screen.
Before Bungie, Blackburn had a stint at Riot Games in 2019 but couldn’t stay away from Destiny 2 for long. He returned in 2020, ready to lead. As for Green, the guy’s a Bungie legend. Worked on everything from Halo PvP to dreaming up Exotic weapons in Destiny. Blackburn says if you know Bungie, you know Green.
And what’s next for Destiny 2 after The Final Shape drops on February 27? A shift from the usual seasonal updates to episodes, releasing thrice a year. It’s a new chapter for Destiny 2, marking the end of the Light and Darkness saga. Sounds like Bungie’s got some big plans, and with Green at the helm, who knows what’s next?
