Epic Games has decided to pour $1.5 billion into creating a Disney-like universe within Fortnite.
Josh D’Amaro, a top Disney executive who might become the next CEO, talked to The Hollywood Reporter about Disney’s big plans with Epic Games. They want to build a space where you can play games, hang out with friends, and even make your own content. It’s like making a world where all Disney stories can come alive.
D’Amaro said Disney wants to create a place that’s interactive and can be enjoyed every day of the year. He explained, “They can come to life in different forms, [like] games. They can come to life in ways that you can just interact with and play with the franchise in a way that’s meaningful to you, a place where you can actually build.” Imagine being able to dive into your favorite Disney stories and play with them however you want!

At D23, D’Amaro mentioned that Walt Disney was always adventurous and took risks. He said that the new Fortnite project keeps that adventurous spirit alive. “We should never rest on past success. We should always look for the next big idea, the next big challenge,” he shared. If Disney just stuck with what worked before, they might not be around today. As people’s tastes change, Disney has to keep up or get left behind.
We think this will be super exciting for fans.
Expect to see characters from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar in Fortnite soon. While Disney and Epic haven’t announced specific projects yet, many are hoping for a virtual Disney World inside Fortnite.
Fortnite is now more than just a battle royale game. It’s a platform hosting different games like Rocket Racing, Fortnite Festival, Lego Fortnite, and lots of other user-created content. Whatever Disney and Epic are planning could be another cool addition to this growing platform.
In the meantime, you can already play as Pixar characters like Mr. Incredible, Elastagirl, and Frozone in Fortnite. Disney villains like Maleficent and Cruella de Vil will be joining them this Fall.
Disney used to make games through its own studios but now partners with other companies. One such game is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle by Microsoft. Not all Disney games do well; for instance, Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws didn’t meet sales expectations, but Ubisoft is still trying.
Who knows what amazing adventures await us next in this new digital world!
