BioWare has spilled the beans about its new fantasy-RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, coming out on October 31.
Game director Corinne Busche discussed the game’s love scenes in a recent IGN interview, saying they wanted the companions to feel real and grounded. “Some of them are quite sensual, some of them are more physical, some are more romantic, some are more spicy,” she explained.
Busche hinted at the potential danger of getting too close to some companions by saying, “You may or may not wake up in a coffin.” Fans of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Lae’zel might find this intriguing.
The game will feature some revealing romance scenes. Art director Matt Rhodes mentioned in a Discord Q&A that players might even be able to flirt with NPCs beyond the main seven characters.
When asked if players could romance Manfred, the skeleton friend of Emmrich, Rhodes replied, “I would say ‘not that skeleton,’ but we’re not saying ‘no skeletons.'”
Choices in romance will also impact combat. Busche shared her own experience: “I romanced Emmrich. What I also loved is–as I’m synergizing with him [in combat] as we’re doing combos–just having him refer to me as ‘my dear’ on the battlefield. ‘Well done, my dear!’ It just fills me with joy every time.”
We love seeing how these personal touches make the game feel more immersive.
Busche also explained why Lace Harding is making a return from Inquisition, saying, “Players fell in love with her [in Inquisition], and we heard them. I felt like it was kind of a no-brainer for us to bring back Harding.”
In The Veilguard, there are seven romanceable companions:
- Davrin, a charming Grey Warden
- Taash, a risk-taker allied with the Lords of Fortune
- Lace Harding, a dwarven scout from Inquisition
- Lucanis Dellamorte, an assassin with the House of Crows
- Bellara Lutare, a romantic Veil-jumper
- Emmrich Volkarin, a necromancer with a skeletal servant named Manfred
- Neve Gallus, a powerful mage from Tevinter and member of the Shadow Dragons
Busche didn’t hold back on which companion has the steamiest romance scene. “I’d have to say Taash,” she revealed. “When I got to that scene and saw the finished version of that cinematic, I was hollering. Hollering!”
