When Elden Ring hit the shelves in February 2022, it became a gaming sensation almost immediately.
By September 2024, Bandai Namco proudly shared that Elden Ring had sold 28.6 million copies around the globe. This surge was helped by the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion that year. Before Elden Ring wowed everyone, the Dark Souls series had already amassed 27 million copies. Some people thought that Elden Ring had already surpassed Dark Souls, but it turned out they jumped the gun.
Fun Fact: The entire Dark Souls series had sold 27 million units combined prior to Elden Ring’s release.
Now Elden Ring alone has surpassed that total.— Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX)
Despite this, Dark Souls has climbed to over 37 million copies, meaning Elden Ring still has some catching up to do. But who knows? The Black Friday sales might have helped it gain ground. We just have to wait for Bandai Namco to spill the beans on the new numbers.
Fans wonder why From Software isn’t rushing to create an Elden Ring sequel.
Instead, they’re focusing on a new game called Elden Right Nightreign, planned for a 2025 release. Although this game won’t support cross-play, players with a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S can join a test next year. Exciting times ahead!
