Epic Games Store Mandates PC Cross-Play for Multiplayer Games

-

Epic Games announced that any multiplayer game on their store must support cross-play with other PC platforms.

In a statement to Eurogamer, Epic said: “Cross-play across all PC storefronts is a requirement of the Epic Games Store for all multiplayer games, ensuring that players and friends can play together wherever they purchase their games. Developers are free to choose any solutions that meet this requirement, including Epic Online Services, which may require a secondary installation to enable the Social Overlay (friends lists, cross-platform invites, etc) on PC.”

This clarification came after Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s use of Epic Online Services raised questions. The game installs an Epic client after players agree to a EULA, even if bought on Steam. Focus, the developer, explained in a forum post that the client allows cross-play and friend list syncing. But, connecting Steam and Epic accounts is optional and doesn’t impact gameplay.

Earlier this year, Earth Defense Force 6 got flak for needing an Epic Games login for online play. Helldivers 2 had similar issues with a PSN login requirement. Space Marine 2, however, broke Warhammer records with almost 250,000 players on Steam, surpassing Total Warhammer III’s peak.

Sometimes we just want to play games without extra logins.

Despite some complaints, Space Marine 2’s sequel has been a hit, attracting a massive player base on Steam.
