In December, the game Fantasian: Neo Dimension is hitting PC and consoles, and it’s special because Nobuo Uematsu says it’s his last video game soundtrack.
Uematsu, a musical genius who taught himself everything he knows, became famous for making music for Final Fantasy. Even before that, he worked on other games, but when he scored the 1987 JRPG, his fame skyrocketed. Over the years, he also created music for Romancing SaGa, Chrono Trigger, and Fairy Fencer F. His soundtrack for Final Fantasy 7 is legendary, and he even came back to work on Remake and Rebirth chapters, mixing old tunes with new ones. Apart from games, Uematsu’s talent reached anime films, and in 2004, he left Square Enix to start Smile Please and Dog Ear Records in 2006. But in 2018, he took a break to take care of himself.
Fans sometimes feel sad when great artists step away, but we always cherish their work.
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the brain behind Final Fantasy and Fantasian’s producer, once hinted that Fantasian might be Uematsu’s last soundtrack due to his health. “Before we approached him to work on Fantasian, he was going through some health issues, and there were concerns if he was going to be able to compose everything or if it was even possible for him to work on this,” Sakaguchi explained in an interview with Mobile Syrup back in 2021. But he managed to compose a whole 60-piece orchestra for the game.
After that, he still worked on the main tunes for Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Fantasian: Neo Dimension was first split into two parts for mobile, and now it’s coming to PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch on December 5.
