The buzz about Fortnite’s first-person mode has been swirling for ages, and now it’s finally arriving with Fortnite Ballistic on December 11.
This isn’t your typical battle royale; instead, picture a 5v5 game where one group tries to blow up a Rift Point Device while the other team works to stop it. No respawns here—if your whole team is knocked out or the device is dealt with, that’s it for the round. Everyone starts off with just a pistol and some credits. You can spend those credits on new weapons between rounds, and each player also picks a gadget like bubble shields or proximity mines to use.
If you make it through a round, you get to keep your stuff, but if you’re taken out, you’ll need to purchase fresh gear. Be careful, though, because if you win by setting off the bomb, you might still get caught in the blast. The first team to secure seven wins takes the whole match.
Sometimes we just can’t wait to see how these new modes will change the game.
Epic Games calls this mode “early access,” meaning it’s not fully finished yet. At first, there will only be one map called Skyline 10, which is set in a city.
Fortnite Ballistic will have both ranked and unranked options. In ranked matches, if someone on your team leaves, the game won’t bring in someone new. But if you get disconnected, you’ll have three minutes to rejoin, which is something Fortnite hasn’t done before in official modes. If you leave ranked games, expect penalties like a short matchmaking ban.
Even though this is a first-person mode, most of Fortnite’s cosmetics, like skins and emotes, will still work.
