Funko Fusion Gives Villain Voice to Funko Pop Haters

-

For a long time, Lego games have been turning famous movies into playful video games with a funny twist.

Now, Funko Fusion is doing something similar but aiming for an older crowd, much like the vinyl Pop toys.

Funko Fusion is a 3D action-platformer where you explore worlds from different movies and TV shows, all mashed together. The bad guy, Eddie, messes with Funko toys, turning them into monsters. You then travel through these altered worlds to fix things.

At an Xbox event in Los Angeles, I tried a level from Jurassic World. It was pretty funny. In one scene, Claire’s big Funko Pop head got stuck in gift shop doors while she and Owen ran from dinosaurs. This gives you an idea of the humor they’re going for.

“The main idea was to make action-platformers that even older people would enjoy,” said Jason Bischoff, Funko’s VP of licensing and business development.

They aimed for a T rating because the people who collect Funko Pop toys are usually older. Also, the game has some “Itchy and Scratchy-like violence,” making it more suitable for teens and up.

Dinosaurs look kinda cute as Funko toys, but they were pretty deadly in the demo.

Some of the properties include John Carpenter’s The Thing. There’s even a demo on Steam where you can play levels based on this horror movie but with a fun twist thanks to the Funko style.

Fans love seeing different worlds come together in one game!

Bischoff mentioned that there are 21 different properties in the game and hinted at secret characters and worlds to discover. The list includes The Thing, Jurassic World, The Mummy (1999), Nope, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Battlestar Galactica (1978), Chucky, Jaws, Back to the Future, Voltron, and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy.

In Jurassic World, you play through scenes where dinosaurs escape and cause chaos. You need to find and defeat specific enemies while exploring large areas full of shops and restaurants.

Each world gives you a choice of different characters from its story, each with their own abilities.

You can pick characters like Owen or Claire at the start of each level. They all have unique weapons and abilities. For example, Owen has a powerful rifle but shoots slowly while Claire has a faster assault rifle but less power.

There’s lots to do besides fighting dinosaurs—like solving puzzles and finding hidden items that help you across all worlds. You can also craft new gear using vinyl collected from defeating enemies or smashing objects.

The Funko approach takes some intense, often gory stories, like The Thing, and makes them funny through the lens of the toys.

In some puzzles you’ll need specific characters or items from other worlds to solve them. For instance, I couldn’t open a gold door in Jurassic World until I used He-Man’s sword from another world.

There are over 60 characters to choose from in Funko Fusion but you’re free to stick with your favorite one throughout the game by using mold machines to craft necessary tools.
