Funko Fusion Review Pop Til You Drop

-

Funko Pop figures have been a hit for years, featuring everyone from rock stars to cartoon mascots.

Now, Funko Fusion has turned these collectibles into a game where you explore worlds from movies and TV shows.

You’ll visit places like Jurassic World, Scott Pilgrim’s universe, and even The Umbrella Academy, all created by Universal Studios.

In the game, you smash objects, fight bad guys, and solve puzzles, similar to how Lego games work. The music from each show or movie plays in the background, making each level feel unique. For example, the Scott Pilgrim levels use songs from the movie, and The Thing levels are extra creepy with the film’s eerie music.

We sometimes wish games were simpler. Funko Fusion tries to be like Lego games but isn’t as straightforward, making it confusing.

Unlike Lego games that guide players through puzzles, Funko Fusion often leaves you guessing what to do next. I found myself stuck because the game didn’t explain things well, like how certain characters have special abilities needed to solve puzzles.

For instance, I was puzzled by yellow arrows in front of a locked door. Much later, I learned that a character from The Umbrella Academy could dash through walls when standing on those arrows. The game never told me this!

During my playthrough, I spent frustrating minutes trying to figure out puzzles that I wasn’t supposed to solve yet. This made the game less fun and more confusing.

Funko Fusion borrows ideas from Lego games but misses the mark in making puzzles clear. It’s as if they wanted to be different but ended up causing chaos.

Some puzzles involve pulling levers quickly or using special items, but if you don’t have the right tools, you can’t solve them. This inconsistency wastes time and makes players feel lost.

Combat in the game is also hit-or-miss. Shooting feels inaccurate, and aiming assist doesn’t help much. Melee attacks work, but enemies can trap you, and endless enemies can mess up your puzzle-solving.

Mini-bosses are especially tricky. One type takes a lot of damage before you can figure out how to defeat them, like shooting a chandelier to make them dizzy for melee attacks. While this adds some strategy, it can also make the fight drag on too long.

Boss fights are more consistent, asking you to hit glowing spots while dodging minions. These parts are clearer and more enjoyable than the rest of the game.

The game was released without co-op play, which would have made many frustrating parts easier. Instead, co-op will be added later, starting with Jurassic World in October. This decision to prioritize developers’ work-life balance is good, but maybe they should have just delayed the whole game.

Without co-op, the game’s flaws are more obvious. Puzzles and combat become harder, and the lack of clear instructions makes everything take longer.

But not everything is bad. The game includes secret levels and characters from horror franchises like Child’s Play and Five Nights at Freddy’s. Finding these hidden parts adds a fun surprise.

One thing Funko Fusion does well is humor. It reimagines classic scenes in funny ways, like a character getting their big head stuck in a door or popping enemies’ heads off. Each world captures its source material with a playful twist, like He-Man levels using a cool cel-shaded look.

A recent patch improved some issues, like making it easier to unlock new worlds and characters. This addresses one of the game’s main appeals: playing as your favorite pop culture heroes and villains.

More patches are needed to fix other problems, like unclear level progression and audio glitches. With these fixes, Funko Fusion could become the fun, adult-oriented game it aims to be.

If future updates improve the game’s balance and instructions, it might finally be worth playing. For now, though, this is one Funko item better left on the shelf.
