Hiroshi Takai mentioned that new Final Fantasy games might be available on both PC and console from day one.
During a chat with GamesRadar, Takai was asked if future titles would have simultaneous PC releases. He said, “I think it’s possible–probably even likely,” but added that each project’s team gets to decide their own approach, so it was just his opinion.
Final Fantasy XVI’s PC version is coming out over a year after the original game. When asked if the delay was justified, Takai replied, “Looking at the results, I think the time we’ve put into optimizing the game for PC was time well spent.”
Square Enix has been making some big changes recently. According to a financial report earlier in 2024, they are being more selective about which games to develop. This led to multiple cancellations and $140,000,000 in losses from “content abandonment,” though they didn’t specify which games were dropped.
The company hasn’t always had smooth PC launches. Games like Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin and Forspoken needed major updates post-launch to improve performance. Takai emphasized that they “always listen to player feedback and bear it in mind.” It’s not just Square Enix focusing on PC ports; Sony is also releasing some of their games on PC right away while others take longer.
We hope these changes will make for better gaming experiences.
Final Fantasy XVI hits PCs on September 17, along with DLC (sold separately). You can already try a demo on Steam!
