Gwent Card Game from The Witcher Goes Real World

-

Geralt’s adventures in The Witcher world are packed with danger, but he sure loves relaxing with a Gwent card game when he’s not busy fighting.

In this two-player game, players take on the roles of generals, leading their armies against each other. While there’s been a mobile app and a free version on Steam, soon you can get your hands on a real-life version!

Teaming up to make this happen, Hachette Boardgames UK and No Loading Games are working together. They’ll release a set with over 400 cards and a playmat, offering a true Witcher 3 vibe. Whether you’re just playing for fun or joining a tournament, there are different rules to fit your style.

“Gwent is the biggest ‘game within a game’ in media history,” shared Rob Trounce, marketing manager at Hachette Boardgames UK (via Eurogamer). “After a 10-year wait, we are proud to be working alongside No Loading Games to bring this beloved game to tabletops in a stunning package–whether it’s a souvenir for fans of Geralt and his adventures, or a game for competitive card game enthusiasts, Gwent will be one of the hottest games of 2025.”

Fans think this is really exciting news!

Winning Gwent isn’t just about simple rules; it’s about strategy. Your path to victory depends on the deck you choose. You can pick from Monsters, Nilfgaardian Empire, Northern Realms, and Scoia’tael, plus Skellige, which came with The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine add-on. Neutral cards are like wildcards, boosting any deck’s power.

The matches are a best of three rounds, marked by red gems. Lose a round, lose a point. If you drop both, that’s game over. In case of a tie, both players usually lose a point, but the Nilfgaardian Empire has a unique edge—they win if it’s a draw.

This Gwent set will cost about $40, expected to land by the end of 2025. While Witcher fans don’t have too long to wait for Gwent, The Witcher 4 is still a couple of years away, even though it’s in full production now.
