For two decades, people have wondered when Valve might finally reveal Half-Life 3.
With the 20th birthday of Half-Life 2 passing without a peep about a sequel, fans were left disappointed. But then, Mike Shapiro, the voice behind G-Man, stirred the pot with a puzzling New Year’s post on X. His eerie G-Man voice echoed, “May the next quarter century deliver as many unexpected surprises, as did the millennium’s first.” He then hinted at time being as fluid as music and mysteriously ended with, “see you in the new year.”
We all love a good mystery.
Adding fuel to the fire, a known Valve insider, Gabe Follower, hinted that Half-Life 3 might be in secret playtesting with Valve developers’ close friends and family. If true, this would be a well-kept secret, as there’s been little else to suggest the game is near completion.
Fans of Half-Life have been waiting for answers since the nail-biting finish of the 2007 expansion, Half-Life 2 Episode 2, which left everyone hanging. There were whispers of a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 set in the Arctic, but according to a documentary by Valve last year, it was canned after six months of development. Instead, they shifted gears to work on Left 4 Dead. The only new installment since then was the VR experience, Half-Life: Alyx, released in 2020.
