Helldivers 2 Developers Explain Need for Aggressive Anti-Cheat Measures

-

So, the folks over at Arrowhead, the brains behind Helldivers 2, dropped a bit of a bombshell recently. They’ve been talking about why their game is all buddy-buddy with anti-cheat software. Specifically, they’re using something called GameGuard. Now, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill anti-cheat. It’s kernel-level. Yeah, you heard that right. Which, naturally, got a bunch of people’s feathers ruffled about privacy and all that jazz.

Peter Lindgren, who’s the tech whiz over there, made it clear on Steam. He said, “Hey, GameGuard’s not gonna stick around like that one guest who doesn’t know when the party’s over. Nor is it gonna snoop through your personal stuff.” They even did a little Q&A thing. Said GameGuard’s pretty chill – doesn’t mess with your game’s vibe or throw up any red flags, security-wise.

But why, oh why, do they need this anti-cheat ninja? Lindgren’s got stories, folks. Remember Helldivers 1? That game was like the Wild West – cheats everywhere. Some of those cheats were so wild, they’d finish the game for you. Poof! Just like that. And Helldivers 2? It’s got this whole galactic war thing going on. Imagine a cheat messing that up for everyone. Not cool, right?

Now, the reaction? Let’s just say it wasn’t all thumbs up and high fives. Over on Reddit and Steam, folks weren’t buying the whole “GameGuard is your friend” spiel. They’re like, “Nah, find something else.” And then there’s the whole Steam Deck compatibility worry.

Despite the drama, Helldivers 2 kinda killed it at launch. We’re talking big numbers on Steam and PlayStation’s biggest PC debut to date. But hey, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. There’ve been some hiccups – crashes, matchmaking headaches. But, a hotfix is supposedly on the way.

Oh, and before I forget, there’s this whole thing about needing a HTML5 video-capable browser to watch some videos. And there’s this video that apparently doesn’t want to play nice with its file format. Plus, there’s a gentle reminder that you can’t see certain content unless you tell them when you were born. You know, just in case you stumbled into this digital world yesterday.

By the way, there’s this “enter” button that’s like your ticket to agreeing with GameSpot’s big book of rules and privacy stuff. And then, just when you think you’re done, they hit you with a “Now Playing: Helldivers 2 – Official PC Features Overview Trailer.” Because, why not?
