Last year, the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie became a surprise sensation, and now a follow-up is on its way.
Josh Hutcherson is coming back as Mike Schmidt, the night guard who deals with spooky, possessed robots made from the souls of kids. In his chat with Esquire, Josh spilled the beans that this sequel will crank up the fear factor. “It’s gonna be scarier,” he shared. “It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher… There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way.”
This new movie takes inspiration from the Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 game, adding Puppet and Balloon Boy to the mix with old favorites like Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy. Although Josh kept plot secrets under wraps, he did mention the film would widen its scope.
“We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded,” Josh explained. He emphasized how crucial it was to keep the characters real, despite the game’s bizarre universe. “That’s something that I really think that we all fought for in the first film, because this world that was created in Five Nights at Freddy’s, it’s so out-there. It’s so over-the-top and wacky, in a way, that to find the emotional truth of the characters was gonna be what was gonna work.”
Fans love when the story stays true to the characters, even if everything around them is wild.
So far, only Josh and Matthew Lillard are set to return for the next chapter. Mark your calendars: Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 is slated to hit theaters on December 5, 2025.
