Hideo Kojima is working on two exciting new games, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and a mysterious Xbox project called OD.
In an interview with Variety, Kojima mentioned that OD is a daring venture for him. “This is a game, but it’s a game like no other. I can’t go into too much detail, and it’s also hard to explain,” he said. “But it’s a bit risky and a new challenge for me within the realm of games.”
To bring OD to life, Kojima teamed up with Jordan Peele. After a chat in Los Angeles where Kojima shared his vision, Peele was on board. “He was really interested in it, so I asked him to join me,” Kojima revealed.
Many filmmakers, including Peele, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Guillermo del Toro, are friends with Kojima. They love games but don’t know how to make them. Kojima said, “People in the movie or music industry love games, because they grew up with it, and I was really surprised by that. They may be filming movies, but they actually love games. I know people who are late to their shoot because they were playing games at home.”
Fans often think it’s cool when different creative worlds come together.
Kojima added, “So, I tell those people, ‘Then you should make games!’ But they all say, ‘I’d like to, but I don’t know how’ and say they can’t do it. So, I thought, then why not do it together? And that’s how I came to partner with Jordan Peele to make a game together.”
OD will be unique, with actors like Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis, and Udo Kier starring in it. Peele even said it’s going to be “crazy.” Kojima Productions is using Microsoft’s cloud technology to create an immersive experience. “It is a game, but at the same time a movie,” Kojima shared through a translator.
The official description of OD explains it will test your fear limits and mix gaming with film.
Kojima Productions has more projects in the works, including an espionage game called Physint and a Death Stranding movie with A24.
Kojima will share more about Death Stranding 2 at the Tokyo Game Show this weekend. Stay tuned for updates!
