Microsoft has reportedly formed a new group within its Activision team to steer the future of Call of Duty.
TheGhostOfHope, who has shared accurate leaks before, mentioned that this committee will consider ideas from studios like Treyarch and Infinity Ward, but they get the final say on what features and systems will appear in upcoming games. Whether Omnimovement stays after Black Ops 6, for instance, is up to them, not the individual studios. Developers have been asked to hold off on changing things like the UI, Prestige, and some gameplay aspects, focusing instead on fresh ideas for maps, modes, and stories.
“That is where they want the creativity to come from,” Hope said.
What I am being told about the future of Call of Duty:
Microsoft has set up a new committee under Activision for Call of Duty that will control “features” & “systems” at the franchise level and let the studios make suggestions. So whether something like Omnimovement which is new…— Hope (@TheGhostOfHope)
Hope also revealed that Microsoft aims to make the UI feel more like the older games. A Treyarch developer expressed hope that Omnimovement becomes a permanent feature in the series.
People have mixed feelings about these changes. Some think it makes sense since Microsoft invested $75.4 billion in Activision Blizzard, so they want to help decide things. But others worry that deciding by committee might lead to bad choices.
Fans sometimes wonder if things like the Zombies mode would even exist if decisions were always made this way. It’s interesting to think about, since Zombies almost didn’t make it into Call of Duty: World at War.
GameSpot has reached out to Microsoft to try and learn more about this.
Black Ops 6, released at the end of October, is already breaking records. Call of Duty games usually come out every year, and Microsoft hasn’t said that’s changing. So, we can expect a new game in 2025, likely a sequel to Black Ops 2, according to reports.
Right now, Activision is focused on Black Ops 6’s seasonal updates. Season 1 began on November 14, and the next big thing is the Citadelle Des Morts Zombies map coming in early December.
