Making caviar in Stardew Valley takes a few steps and some patience.
To create caviar, you need sturgeon roe and a preserves jar. You can’t use just any fish roe; it must be from a sturgeon. This makes caviar a valuable item in the game, more valuable than the sturgeon roe itself. Plus, it’s great for gifting and required for the movie theater bundle after you complete one of the main storylines.
How to make caviar
To make caviar, place sturgeon roe into a preserves jar. While any fish roe can be aged in a preserves jar, only sturgeon roe becomes caviar. You can get sturgeon roe mainly by two ways.
The first and more reliable method is by putting a sturgeon into a fish pond. For this, you need 200 stones, 5 seaweed, 5 green algae, and 5,000G to have the Carpenter build it. Once built (takes three days), you need to catch a sturgeon during summer or winter and place it into the pond.
The pond starts with one sturgeon. To increase their numbers, complete quests that appear every few days. The more sturgeons in the pond, the higher your chance of getting roe each day.
The quests are:
- 1 sturgeon – 1 diamond
- 3 sturgeons – 1 jelly or 1 pickle or 2 maple syrup
- 5 sturgeons – 3 omni geodes
- 7 sturgeons – 1 nautilus shell
If you’re lucky enough to get a treasure chest while catching a sturgeon, there might be some sturgeon roe inside. However, this method is less reliable as it’s based on luck.
Fans often find these quests fun but sometimes challenging!
Once you have the sturgeon roe, put it into a preserves jar. You can craft preserves jars at farming level 4 using 50 wood, 40 stone, and 8 coal. It takes just over four in-game days for the roe to turn into caviar.
