Earlier this month, God of War Ragnarok finally became available on PC after being a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
Fans are thrilled about the game’s release but not so happy about Sony’s decision to force PC players to connect to PlayStation Network. This requirement has led to a wave of negative reviews on Steam from disappointed gamers. Interestingly, a modder named iArtorias quickly created a solution to bypass this restriction, but the mod was soon taken down.
According to IGN, iArtorias released the NoPSSDK mod, which removes the PSN linking requirement, allowing the game to be played offline. On their Nexus Mods page, iArtorias promised to “try to maintain the tool even if something changes, but hopefully nothing crucial happens.”
It seems inevitable that Sony will find a way to counteract iArtorias’ mod and others like it. In fact, Nexus Mods reported that the mod has already been removed by its creator, though the reasons remain unclear.
We can’t help but wonder why Sony included this PSN requirement for a single-player game like Ragnarok in the first place. Online connections make sense for multiplayer games, but it’s puzzling why a solo adventure needs the same rules.
Sony has shown some flexibility before, like when it removed the PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 after fans protested. Yet, the upcoming remake of Until Dawn will still need a mandatory PSN connection. If Sony keeps this trend, it will likely annoy gamers who prefer playing offline.
