James Wan’s company, Atomic Monster, plans to turn the game Pacific Drive into a TV show, according to a Variety article.
The game, made by Ironwood Studios, throws players into a weird zone where they must rely on their car to stay alive. It came out in February and got a lot of attention, even getting nominated for Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards 2024 and winning Best Gameplay at the BIG Festival. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association also liked it, putting it on their Nebula Awards’ reading list. James Wan, along with Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Atomic Monster, and Jeff Ludwig from The Menagerie Productions, will be the big bosses of this project. However, where the show will air is still a mystery.
Atomic Monster is busy with lots of TV projects. They’ve got a scary thriller called Teacup on Peacock, a spy show with Simu Liu named Copenhagen, and a Prime Video series called Obsession. They’re also working on a Munsters reboot, a Robocop series for Amazon, and a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+.
The game Pacific Drive happens in a made-up place called the Olympic Exclusion Zone. Here, players gather stuff, fix up their car, and deal with strange happenings in a spooky world. People say it’s kind of like Stalker because of its creepy vibes and deep story.
Fans love when games become TV shows because it brings a new way to enjoy the stories we love.
Atomic Monster’s new project joins other video games that have been turned into TV shows, like HBO’s The Last of Us and Amazon’s Fallout.
Mark Delaney from GameSpot talked about Pacific Drive in his review. He said it has an “intoxicating atmosphere” and called it “a true RPG–a caRPG, if you will,” where dealing with the game’s “unpredictable anomalies” feels like “a joy ride through one hell of a winding road.”
