Path of Exile 2 is now available in early access, bringing a lot of new stuff and upgrades, but some old elements remain.
One example is the scrolls needed to identify rare items, which are still a part of the game. While portal scrolls have gotten simpler, players must still gather these identify scrolls to check out loot stats and wear them right away. Luckily, there’s a character who can make this easier for you. Here’s how you can identify items without spending anything in Path of Exile 2.
Unlocking Sorrow Among Stones in Path of Exile 2
To identify items for free, you first need to bring back to life a specific NPC during Act 1’s main storyline, which is connected to The Mysterious Shade quest, involving quite a few tasks.
After taking down Ervig, the Rotten Druid, you’ll find yourself in a new region beyond the Grim Tangle. There, you’ll come across Lachlann the Lost, who gives you the Sorrow Among Stones quest. True to classic ARPG style, you’ll be exploring a graveyard in search of two dungeons. Be careful; the enemies here are tough, so don’t run around attracting them all at once.
Your mission is to conquer both dungeons and defeat the bosses: Draven the Eternal Praetor and Asinia, the Praetor’s Consort. These bosses are friends, so they will come to each other’s aid during their fights, making things more challenging.
While battling Draven, watch out for his series of melee hits. Keep moving and avoid the edges to prevent getting trapped. Asinia’s battle is trickier, as she creates traps and then attacks. You can dodge before the trap appears or break the walls if you get caught.
Once you’ve beaten them, return to where you started and talk to Lachlann. After opening the gate, follow him inside. You’ll realize that Lachlann is the final boss of this quest. It’s a simple fight, but stay alert for his area attacks, which can slow you down. Running around might look funny, but it works. Defeat him to obtain Count Lachlann’s Ring.
Head back to camp HQ (you can use time portals for free) and give the ring to Una. This completes both Sorrow Among Stones and The Mysterious Shade quests at the same time.
Free Item Identification in Path of Exile 2
After finishing The Mysterious Shade, The Hooded One will appear as an NPC at the base camp next to the stash. Besides chatting about the story, you can interact with them to identify items. They will do this for free, as thanks for bringing them back to life.
Simply have the items you want to identify in your inventory, not in your stash, and choose the option. The Hooded One will take care of it, no questions, no cost.
Fans appreciate having options. You can still collect scrolls and identify items yourself if you want, especially when you’re exploring and don’t want to return to camp. But if you run low, just head back to camp, and The Hooded One will help.
