When you think of PlayStation, games like The Last of Us, Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn, or God of War might pop into your head.
But looking forward, PlayStation’s CEO Hermen Hulst is hinting that Sony will focus more on family-friendly games like Astro Bot. Hulst chatted with Astro Bot’s creative director Nicolas ‘Nico’ Doucet on the official PlayStation Podcast about this shift in focus.
Spotted by Eurogamer, Hulst said, “I think it’s massively important that PlayStation Studios develops games in various genres, and the family market, I think, is really important for us to focus on.”
Astro Bot has been the best-reviewed game this year, showing the potential of the franchise for PlayStation. Hulst, who became PlayStation’s joint-CEO earlier this year, seems very aware of this.
“Astro is very, very important to PlayStation,” Hulst noted. “Obviously, we had the pre-install [Astro’s Playroom] on the PlayStation 5, that millions and millions and millions of people have embraced and loved, and I think that’s become a little bit of a platform to launch this new game now.”
In addition, PlayStation is launching Lego Horizon Adventures on PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch this holiday season. This will be the first time Aloy and the Horizon franchise appear on a rival console. This game will be more family-friendly, without “devastating” or “heavy” themes.
We love seeing more family-friendly games from PlayStation.
Astro Bot came out last week on September 6, so check out GameSpot’s Astro Bot review. Also, Sony just announced the PS5 Pro, which will cost $700 and come out in November.
