Sega is bringing back an old favorite with a brand new Virtua Fighter game.
Chatting with VGC, Justin Scarpone spilled the beans about Virtua Fighter’s return, along with other classic Sega games mentioned earlier. Although no juicy details about this new project were shared, it’s not clear if it’ll tie into a larger transmedia plan like Shinobi, which is getting both a game and a movie.
“So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards,” Scarpone said. “Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.”
If this new Virtua Fighter isn’t just a rehash, it’ll be the sixth game in the series that first wowed us with its 3D fights in 1993. Virtua Fighter 5 hit home consoles back in 2007 and got a makeover in 2021.
Sega’s been playing the transmedia game since Sonic The Hedgehog hit the big screen in 2020. The third movie is coming out next month. More Sega fun includes the Yakuza: Like A Dragon series streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Sonic X Shadow Generations for consoles and PC, and a quirky title called Metaphor: ReFantazio from Atlus.
Sometimes, fans wonder if these old games will still be as fun as they remember.
