Sony Takes Major Step with Elden Ring Parent Company, No Buyout

-

Sony’s plan to acquire over 12 million more shares in Kadokawa Corporation will make it the largest shareholder, owning 10% of the company.

Sony shared that it will finalize this purchase on January 7, 2025, spending about 50 billion yen, which is around $319 million USD. This follows an earlier investment in Kadokawa back in February 2021. The two companies have a history of collaborating on various ventures, and even though there were whispers about Sony buying Kadokawa entirely, it’s not happening right now.

In this new deal, Sony and Kadokawa will join forces to create TV dramas and movies from Kadokawa’s stories, but they haven’t said which ones yet. They’ll also team up on anime projects and grow Kadokawa’s game publishing.

Elden Ring, a major hit from Kadokawa, will get a new chapter called Elden Ring Nightrein in 2025. Besides games, Kadokawa is famous for stories like Re: Zero and Delicious in Dungeon.

Fans sometimes wonder if all these investments make sense.

Sony is also a big player in Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite. Over recent years, Sony has poured more than $1.45 billion into Epic, a hefty sum compared to what it’s investing in Kadokawa.
