Sony has shared some fresh details about PS5 sales and what gamers can look forward to in the future.
According to a recent financial document from Sony, they shipped 3.8 million PS5s between July and September 2024, which is less than last year’s same time frame. Even though they reached a total of 65.5 million units sold, it still trails behind the PS4, which had sold 67.5 million by this point in its life. On a happier note, the Game & Network Services part of Sony raked in around $7 billion, a 12% increase from last year, thanks to popular third-party games. One standout hit was an action RPG from China, likely Black Myth: Wukong, which sold 18 million copies in just two weeks.
Sometimes, we can’t help but wonder if all these numbers will keep climbing.
The Network services side of things also grew by 18%, attributed to more people subscribing to higher levels of PlayStation Plus and a hike in subscription costs. Looking ahead, Sony is sticking with a mix of solo and multiplayer games. They learned a lot from the success of Helldivers 2 and the lessons from canceling The Last of Us multiplayer and pulling Concord, which will guide their future live-service strategies.
Although Sony mentioned there wouldn’t be any big first-party games until April 2025, fans can get excited for Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, coming next year. Plus, Haven Studio’s live-service game, Fairgames, is still in the works.
