On December 3, 1994, Sony launched the original PlayStation in Japan, forever altering the gaming world.
While American gamers had to wait until September 9, 1995, to experience the PlayStation, Sony isn’t making us wait to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The party kicks off early, and plans are already in motion.
Starting in October and running through January, Sony Music will release some iconic PlayStation game soundtracks on Spotify and other digital platforms. Titles confirmed so far include God of War, God of War II, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Twisted Metal, Starhawk, and Unit 13.
A special treat for racing fans is on the way too. Sony is releasing a free trial version of Gran Turismo 7 called My First GT. Although there’s no specific date yet, this trial will be available during the holiday season for both PS4 and PS5, featuring some fan-favorite cars and tracks.
Sports gaming enthusiasts, mark your calendars for September 21 and 22. These dates will feature a free online multiplayer weekend with various esports tournaments. Games like Madden NFL 24, MLB The Show 24, NBA 2K25, NBA 2K24, Tekken 8, Guilty Gear Strive, and EA UFC 5 will be part of the action. Competing won’t require a PlayStation Plus membership, but you’ll need the games to join in and win cool prizes like a PS 30th anniversary-themed avatar.
Sometimes, we just can’t wait for the next big reveal.
More surprises for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary are on the horizon. Some fans speculate that Sony might use this milestone to unveil the PlayStation 5 Pro design, which has been rumored to be coming soon.
This week also sees the release of Astro Bot, which is getting fantastic reviews and includes many nods to classic PlayStation games.
