Creating a new Star Wars game that feels like it belongs in the original movies is no easy task.
Massive Entertainment worked hard to balance keeping that classic look while adding their own touches for Star Wars Outlaws. In a recent GameSpot video, they talked about how they managed to stay true to the Star Wars vibe yet still make the game feel fresh.
The team got a lot of ideas from old concept art and sketches. These helped them design places, ships, and characters that could have easily existed in the original Star Wars trilogy. For example, Kay Vess’ ship, the Trailblazer, looks like it could’ve flown right out of those old movies.
Drawing inspiration from ’60s and ’70s technology and even everyday items like kitchen tools, Massive Entertainment wanted everything to look real and fit right into the Star Wars world. “For us it was really important to bring new things, but in the same methodology,” said Marthe Jonkers, associate art director.
They knew they were on the right track when LucasFilm couldn’t tell if something was new or from the original movies. “We definitely had situations where people weren’t sure if this was something we had created or if it’s something that we took from existing stuff,” explained John Bjorling. “And I think that’s like the highest grade of accomplishment that you could probably have.”
The final game feels like it belongs in the Star Wars universe. Kay Vess and her companion Nix visit places that seem lived-in, with tech and fashion straight out of a funky sci-fi decade. Even small details add to this authenticity.
Fans love seeing such dedication to making things feel real.
