Unknown Worlds dropped a bit of a bombshell recently. They’ve made it clear that the next Subnautica game won’t be following the live-service trend. Despite what some rumors were whispering.
They elaborated a bit on their website. “In reference to ‘Games-as-a-Service,’ we simply plan to continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games,” they said. Imagine their Early Access update model, but on steroids. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription. Nada.
The studio threw in a bit more clarity. The game’s going to be a solo adventure at its heart. Sure, there’s co-op, but that’s just if you’re feeling sociable. And, don’t hold your breath for a release date. Looks like 2025’s the earliest we can dive in, with no early access in 2024. But, hey, they’ve promised to spill more beans later this year.
Now, about those live-service rumors. Turns out, they might’ve been sparked by an outdated document from Krafton’s earnings. A document that’s since been updated on their investor site, scrubbing any mention of games-as-a-service.
Flashback to 2022, and Unknown Worlds was already teasing us with talk of a new Subnautica game. Oh, the anticipation!
Let’s not forget about Subnautica: Below Zero, the series’ chilly sequel. Before that, we had the original Subnautica, making a splash in 2018. GameSpot’s Brett Todd had some kind thoughts, calling it “one of the most fascinating survival games around,” thanks to its story, scares, and stunning underwater scenery.
