Unreal Engine Could Simplify Halo’s PS5 Launch, Experts Suggest

-

After the 2024 Halo World Championships wrapped up, 343 Industries shared some major updates about what’s next for Halo.

The company is changing its name to Halo Studios, and future Halo games will now be created using Unreal Engine 5 instead of the old Slipstream Engine. This has sparked fresh chatter about Halo possibly landing on PlayStation 5, and experts believe this change could simplify the process of bringing Halo to different platforms.

Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter mentioned on Eurogamer that using Unreal Engine 5 would make it easier to develop games for multiple systems compared to the current Slipstream engine. “An engine made for various platforms is simpler to manage than tech specifically made for Xbox and PC,” he said.

Earlier this year, The Verge revealed that Microsoft was thinking about releasing more games on PlayStation 5, and Halo could be one of them. While Halo is a big deal for Xbox, putting games on more platforms has been good for Microsoft. Sea of Thieves got new fans on PS5, and Bethesda plans to release Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on the console after being exclusive to Xbox Series X|S for a bit.

People think this switch to Unreal Engine 5 could mean more games going to PS5, but that might not be the main reason for the change. Many game developers know how to use Unreal Engine 5, making it easier for new team members to start working on Halo projects without needing extra training.

Fans sometimes wonder what surprises are coming next.

Halo Studios hasn’t announced when the next Halo game will come out, but the 25th anniversary of Halo: Combat Evolved is just two years away. Microsoft has hinted at celebrating this milestone in 2026, aligning with the original Xbox’s 25th birthday. Until then, we can only guess if a new Halo game will be part of the celebration.
