In a recent earnings call, Warner Bros. shared some disappointing news about their gaming division’s performance in 2024, so they’re shifting focus to four major franchises, including Batman.
David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, mentioned that with the big financial blow from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus, they’re now aiming to concentrate on Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and especially Batman. By making fewer games, they hope to have a more stable business in the gaming world.
“We’re through some of the worst–and it hasn’t been pretty on the gaming business–but we have four games that are really powerful and have a real constituency that love them, and we’re going to focus on those four primarily,” Zaslav explained during a financial call (via IGN). “We’re going to go away from trying to launch 10, 12, 15, 20 different games. I think we have a real chance now with focus to have the gaming business be steadier. We have four strong and profitable game franchises with loyal, global fans: Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC in particular Batman. We are focusing our development efforts on those core franchises, with proven studios to improve our success ratio.”
The new Arkham Shadow game, exclusive to VR, has been welcomed warmly, unlike Batman’s controversial role in Suicide Squad. People wonder how well Arkham Shadow will sell, though it comes free with the new Meta Quest 3S headset, so that’s a plus!
Fans sometimes feel like these companies can’t decide what they want to do next.
On the horizon, there’s buzz about a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, while NetherRealm is busy with fresh content for Mortal Kombat 1. Meanwhile, Monolith Productions is crafting a Wonder Woman game. After the flop of Suicide Squad, Rocksteady is reportedly exploring new projects, possibly including a director’s cut of Hogwarts Legacy.
