The Game Awards unveiled an epic cinematic trailer for The Witcher 4, sparking excitement with its focus on Ciri as the lead character.
In a conversation with PC Gamer, Sebastian Kalemba, the game’s director, shared that choosing Ciri for this role felt like a “natural choice” since her story connects seamlessly with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Kalemba expressed, “There’s plenty of room for her and for us, also, to build on top of [her]. There’s so much room for exploration, and because she’s such a nuanced character, the beginning of her journey gives us freedom and so many opportunities to be able to dig in and use [that] for good.”
Fans were thrilled to hear that Ciri was a playable character in The Witcher 3, and Gosia Mitręga, the executive producer, mentioned that she has a lot of potential for storytelling due to her being “less defined as a character.”
Even though Ciri takes center stage, Geralt will still make an appearance in The Witcher 4. Kelamba emphasized how vital Geralt is to the story and to Ciri, ensuring fans that he is “definitely” going to show up. His voice even makes a brief cameo in the latest trailer.
We love it when characters from old stories return in new ones; it feels like meeting an old friend again.
“I can’t tell you more, but I think the promise is enough. But we believe that this journey, this new saga, this new trilogy is definitely for her,” Kalemba added.
As it turns out, The Witcher 4 is just the beginning of a new trilogy, with CD Projekt also working on other projects like a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and a Witcher remake.
Doug Cockle, the voice behind Geralt, had to retract some of his statements about Geralt’s role in The Witcher 4 after the developers asked him not to spill the beans.
The stunning CG trailer shown at The Game Awards was crafted by Platige Image, using a special version of Unreal Engine 5 and running on a secret Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU. While it showcases assets from the game, its main purpose is to set the mood for the adventure that awaits players.
