In 2020, IO Interactive, the folks behind Hitman, announced they were making a new James Bond game, marking the first console game since 2012’s 007 Legends.
IO Interactive’s boss, Hakan Abrak, explained to IGN that Project 007 isn’t tied to any Bond film. They have the creative freedom to craft their own version of the iconic spy. “What’s exciting about that project is that we actually got to do an original story,” Abrak shared. “So it’s not a gamification of a movie. It’s completely beginning and becoming a story, hopefully for a big trilogy out there in the future. And equally important and exciting, it’s a new Bond. It’s a Bond we built from ground up for gamers. It’s extremely exciting with all the tradition and all the history there is there together to work on this together with the family of creating a young Bond for gamers; a Bond that the gamers can call their own and grow with.”
While Abrak didn’t spill the beans on when Project 007 would be released, he did mention that “the production’s going amazingly well.” His hope is that this game will kick off more James Bond games down the line.
Sometimes, fans just want something fresh and new to keep them excited.
“I don’t want to speak too big about it, but I just hope we’ll do a thing that will define James Bond in gaming for years to come,” Abrak added. He wants to create not just a game, but a universe that players can enjoy for a long time, alongside the Bond movies.
As it stands, Project 007 doesn’t have a set release date. Earlier this year, Ubisoft’s seasoned pro Rodrigo Santoro joined the team as mission director. It’s possible this game might see the light of day before the next Bond movie hits theaters.
